Friends of Decatur Public Library

What can Friends do to improve library services to the community?

1. Volunteer.

Alabama Virtual Library (AVL): Place AVL forms and information in various companies and pick up completed forms.  Volunteers will be needed to key in the information, proof it, and fill out the AVL card that will go back to the company.  One person is needed to take charge of this project and oversee it, while helpers will be needed for evening and weekend hours to enter the cardholders' information in the computer.

Book Sale Room: Ongoing help for the Book Sale room; help for big sales that come along now and then; help for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine special mini-sales.  Staff for the Book Sale room to serve coffee, tea, cocoa, and lemonade.  At least one person is needed to organize each opportunity and lots of help to follow through.

Electronic Library: Regularly sign up people in the library for AVL cards and E-Book accounts.  One or two people to talk with the patrons and key in the information.

Children's Department: Late afternoon, evening, and weekend help is needed in the Children's department.  Several folks who love children are needed to oversee and assist in that area during the times when no one else is available.

2. Remember the library in your estate planning or will, or at the end of the year for a tax break.

3. Make donation in memory or honor of someone or something or to commemorate an event.

4. Be ready to write a letter to the local paper or politicians in support of the library.

5. Donate used books to the Friends of the Library for their book sale room.  All proceeds will support the library.
